WHAT IS A SELF DIRECTED IRA? (INTRO - PART 1)

Have you ever heard of a self-directed IRA? More common is the ROTH IRA or the Traditional IRA that we hear about being offered by popular brokerage firms like Fidelity and Vanguard. But, these IRA's offer the tax benefits we are all looking for but do not offer many options as to what you can invest your money into. For example, with a regular IRA of course you can choose different stocks to invest in or mutual funds. But, what if you wanted to invest in a friend's start up business? Could you do that with the funds in your ROTH IRA with let's say Fidelity throught that Roth IRA (so by moving the money from within your ROTH IRA and investing directly into that business)? No you could not! A Self Directed IRA could be an option if you want more autonomy and control over the funds in your IRA but still want the tax deffered growth.
