The Devastating Impact of Inflation on the UK

UK Inflation is destroying the UK Economy. This week the UK inflation rate was reported at 7.9%, a drop from 8.7% from the prior month. This means consumer prices are still up 7.9% from last year and WAY above the Bank of England target inflation rate of 2%. In conjunction with this, the Bank of England have hiked interest rates to 5%, up from the 0.1% they were just a couple of years ago, putting ever more financial stress on the UK public and taking the cost of living crisis to another level. Here are my thoughts on this latest piece of economic data and what I think the UK government and Bank of England should do about it... Switzerland stands out as it successfully manages inflation unlike other countries. Here's why

As many countries across the globe battle sky-high inflation, Switzerland’s economy is seeing something far less dramatic. Inflation in Switzerland hit a 29-year high of 3.5% in 2022. While high by Swiss standards, that figure is well below the double-digit inflation of comparable economies including the United States (9.1%), United Kingdom (11.1%) and euro zone (10.6%). On top of that, economists say it’s easing. “It’s coming down a little bit,” Tobias Straumann, professor of modern and economic history at the University of Zurich, told CNBC. So, what is it about the Swiss economy that’s allowed it to largely sidestep inflation, and what can other countries learn from it? For millions of Americans, the so-called golden years will actually be years of despair and uncertainty. And it’s very likely that you are one of those that will never be able to stop working and finally retire. But you’re not alone in this. Over 90 percent of working households in the U.S. do not meet retirement savings targets for their age and income. In fact, even the people that did absolutely everything right throughout their working years are still at risk of seeing their savings vanish as financial markets experience the worst downturn since the Great Recession, interest rates soar, and record inflation means the value of their money is steadily dropping. New data shows that the country’s unfolding retirement crisis just took a massive turn for the worse. Crippling stock market losses, cracks in the U.S. pension system, and the growing Social Security deficit are all combining to create increasingly harder conditions for workers to save for retirement and maintain th...
