Potential Impact of Government Shutdown on Stocks, Economy, Government Programs, and Workers

The 2023 fiscal year has brought many surprises upon investors — some more welcome than others, such as August's PCE report pointing to cooling inflation. Some investors are concerned with all the recent headwinds and volatility in the market, wondering where they should park their money. Interactive Brokers Chief Strategist Steve Sosnick joins Yahoo Finance to break down recent market developments and offer insights to investors as to where they should be paying attention. "If the market is reassessing the risk/reward, you should be doing the same," Sonick says on short-term investing. Commenting on the direction of interest rates in 2023, Sosnick is looking to keep investments in cash, since "you're getting some yield. Actually if inflation is quiet, we get real yield. You're not even losing money vis-a-vis inflation". For more expert insight and the latest market action, click here to watch this full episode of Yahoo Finance Live. Subscribe

Economist suggests recession likely as unemployment rate approaches critical threshold

Calls of a global economic slowdown and U.S. recession risks are swirling into the perfect storm as officials continue to keep a close eye on economic prints. FWDBONDS Chief Economist Chris Rupkey and Sonali Pier, PIMCO Managing Director and Portfolio Manager, join Yahoo Finance Live anchors Julie Hyman and Brad Smith to discuss U.S. recession forecasts. "For a recession to be a recession is the unemployment rate needs to rise 0.5 percent points from the low, and that pretty much almost every time, except one since the 70s, meant we were in a recession," Rupkey explains. "There's reasons to believe that 3.8 last month won't stick." Pier outlines the best portfolio and sector strategies investors should keep in mind amid recession risks. Economist Predicts Dim Economic Outlook for U.S. in 2024

The U.S. economy is facing challenges from several headline events — including an imminent government shutdown and labor and energy pressures — while still facing down a possible recession. PIMCO Managing Director and Economist Tiffany Wilding joins Yahoo Finance Live to discuss the U.S. economy's outlook amid the multitude of headwinds. "The United States core PCE inflation was actually around 6% when the Fed started hiking interest rates," Wilding explains. "Looking back in time, when you've had rate hiking cycles that have started like that... it doesn't tend to end with the economy expanding — it tends to end unfortunately in some sort of recession. Now that recession could be mild." For more expert insight and the latest market action, click here to watch this full episode of Yahoo Finance Live. Economist predicts a challenging and uncertain journey for the Fed's inflation target ahead

While the Federal Reserve's target inflation rate remains at 2%, rising auto prices and energy costs present the biggest challenges to cooling inflation in the short term. Annex Wealth Management Chief Economist Brian Jacobsen joins Yahoo Finance live anchor Rachelle Akuffo to explain why it may be a long time until the Fed finally achieves its target rate, especially if a "protracted" government shutdown becomes a reality. Jacobsen explains why "it's really consumer spending" — which has slowed in the third quarter of 2023 — that will be the biggest "pain" in realizing the Fed's ultimate inflation goal. Bank Bailouts: An Examination of Financial Assistance in the United States and United Kingdom

Are they working? No. UK ECONOMY: We're a bit screwed really! The Pound is dropping like a stone meaning that we have to pay more for imports, which is really scary seeing as we have virtually gotten rid of our entire manufacturing sector. Our economy has shrunk half a percent in the last quarter, and I have not even mentioned the Credit Crunch. Most people in the UK seem to think all that has been going on is not relevant to them. The housing market is in steep decline but something even more frightening is about to happen, and those who are younger are unlikely to remember such an occurrence in their lifetime; forced sales. Now that the economy is contracting unemployment will rise, meaning that more people will be unable to service their mortgages. I dont know about you but when I look at the prices of homes in London for example I was always baffled by how so many people could earn enough to fuel the demand. I suspect many lied in order to get the loans th

Economist Asserts Goldman Sachs Predicts Soft Landing, Decreases Recession Probability in the US

Goldman Sachs has cut its odds of the U.S. going into a recession in the next 12 months, putting it at 15%, down from 20%. In an interview with Yahoo Finance Live from the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference, Goldman Sachs Chief Economist Jan Hatzius explains the call saying "the economy has continued to be pretty resilient," adding there has been "supportive" income growth and a balanced labor market. "I think there is increased evidence that we can see rebalancing of the economy, inflation coming under control and it's not going to require a recession. So we have progressively reduced our recession probability," Hatzius says. Hatzius takes it a step further by saying a soft landing is in the cards. When it comes to the Federal Reserve, Hatzius think it's "highly unlikely" the Fed will hike at it's next meeting. Beyond that, Hatzius says it's "possible" the Fed hikes again, though it's not his expectati
