The European Commission has approved the purchase of Activision Blizzard by the American company, Vivendi. This deal could have serious repercussions for the video game industry. The European Commission (EC) has given the green light to the purchase of Activision Blizzard by the French media giant, Vivendi. This deal was approved by the EC after a long investigation into the potential anti-competitive effects of the transaction. The purchase of Activision Blizzard by Vivendi will create a media giant with a portfolio of video game titles, films, and music. This could potentially create a monopoly in the video game industry, as Vivendi will control a large number of popular titles such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Overwatch. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had previously attempted to block the deal, citing concerns of anti-competitive behaviour. However, the EC has now determined that the deal is not anti-competitive and has approved it. This is bad news for the FTC, as it will be unable to protect consumers from potential anti-competitive practices. The approval of the deal could also have serious repercussions for the video game industry. Microsoft and Sony, two of the biggest players in the industry, could be negatively affected by the deal. Microsoft’s upcoming title, Redfall, could be in jeopardy as Vivendi now owns the rights to the game.
