On Tuesday, Republican Senator and former presidential candidate, Senator McCarthy, laid waste to Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell for his ties to a Chinese spy. In a heated exchange between the two politicians, Senator McCarthy accused Swalwell of having been briefed by the FBI about his relationship with the Chinese spy, Fang Fang, and not taking appropriate action. McCarthy said, “If you got the briefing I got from the FBI, you would have done exactly what I did. You would have cut all ties immediately.” Swalwell has been under scrutiny for his relationship with Fang Fang, a suspected Chinese spy who reportedly worked to cultivate relationships with elected officials in the Bay Area. Swalwell has denied any wrongdoing and has stated that he was unaware of Fang Fang’s activities. McCarthy accused Swalwell of being “naive” and “reckless” in his dealings with Fang Fang. He also accused Swalwell of not taking the appropriate action after being briefed by the FBI. McCarthy said, “You should have cut all ties to her immediately and you didn’t. You should have reported it to the FBI immediately and you didn’t.” Swalwell has denied any wrongdoing and has stated that he was unaware of Fang Fang’s activities. He has also called for an investigation into the matter.
