On the evening of Tuesday 8th June, Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, National Medical Director of NHS England, took part in a virtual Q&A session with members of Youth Parliament for Birmingham (YPAG) and Think4Brum. During the session, Professor Keogh discussed the NHS’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact it has had on the local Birmingham community. He also shared his thoughts on the importance of public health, and how it can be improved through better access to healthcare, education and employment. The session was attended by a number of young people from Birmingham, who asked a variety of questions related to the pandemic, ranging from the safety of medical staff to the availability of mental health services. Professor Keogh was keen to emphasise the need for collaboration between the NHS, local authorities and the community in order to ensure the best possible outcomes for everyone. He also spoke about how the NHS has adapted to the pandemic, such as introducing virtual consultations and telemedicine services. He highlighted the importance of digital access to healthcare, and how it can help to reduce the number of people attending hospital, as well as enabling more people to access the services they need. Professor Keogh also discussed the NHS’s commitment to tackling health inequalities, particularly in terms of access to services. He explained that the NHS is working to ensure that everyone has access to the same quality of care, regardless of their background or circumstances. Finally, Professor Keogh spoke about the importance of public health, and how it can be improved through better access to healthcare, education and employment. He highlighted the need for everyone to get involved in their local community and to work together to help improve public health. Overall, the Q&A session was a great opportunity for young people in Birmingham to gain a better understanding of how the NHS is responding to the pandemic, and to learn more about the importance of public health.
