The Federal government contracts with an insurer to provide retiring employees with a stream of income for life, called an annuity. An annuity is income insurance. You give the insurance company a lump sum of money at retirement with your TSP balance and the insurer gives you a monthly stream of income for life. If you live to 200 years old, the insurance company is obligated to pay. The insurance company benefits because they keep your annuity contribution once you die. You benefit because you never run out of money. You have the option to do a single life TSP annuity or a Joint Life TSP Annuity. The Single life annuity option pays a stream of income until the annuitant dies. Once the annuitant dies, the money stops. With a joint life annuity, the annuitant and their spouse are guaranteed to receive a stream of income for both their lives. If one spouse dies, the other spouse will continue to receive the annuity until they die. If you have a spouse and want to guarantee them a stream of income, get the Joint Life Annuity. The only downside is that your monthly annuity payment will be lower than single life. The Joint Life Annuity will either pay 100% or 50% of the original annuity amount when the annuitant dies. The annuitant can choose to name beneficiary for their TSP annuity. They can add riders to their annuity which give their beneficiaries some form of benefit if they die. They can add a TSP cash refund annuity rider, which refunds any unpaid principle that was put into the annuity. For example, if the annuitant starts an annuity with $500,000 and dies after only $400,000 is paid out, the beneficiary will get $100,000. Another rider option is the TSP Ten Year Certain rider. This rider guarantees the annuitants beneficiary will receive payments for up to ten year if the annuitant dies without receiving ten years of payments. For example, if the annuitant dies after five years, the beneficiary will receive five years of payments. Basically, ten years of payments are guaranteed. TSP Annuity taxation depends on whether it was funded from the Roth TSP or the Traditional TSP. Annuities bought with the Roth TSP are tax free as long as the annuitant is 59.5 and their first Roth contribution was made five calendar years or more in the past. Funding your annuity with the Traditional TSP will result in all your payments counted as ordinary income. You should not take the TSP Annuity. If you die, you're family will inherit nothing unless you have the Ten Year Certain or Cash Refund rider. Even those do not guarantee anything for your family. Instead, you can managed you own money and use the TSP Monthly Withdrawal option. This allows you to invest your own money and adapt how much you want to withdrawal every month. When you die, your beneficiaries inherit your balance....(read more)
