The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been faced with several challenges over the years, particularly during election periods. Many have attributed these challenges to the intentions of ruling parties, especially the All Progressives Congress (APC), to rig elections in their favor. Bola Akinterinwa, a renowned professor of international relations and former director-general of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, believes that the ruling APC has deliberately created an environment in which INEC cannot effectively carry out its duties. One of the challenges faced by INEC is the issue of voter registration. The ruling party has been accused of engaging in the illegal registration of voters, particularly in areas where they are likely to gain an advantage. This creates a situation whereby the electoral process is rigged in favor of the ruling party, and the opposition is unfairly disadvantaged. Another challenge faced by INEC is the use of electronic voting machines. Although the commission has made efforts to introduce electronic voting machines, the ruling party has resisted this move, citing concerns about the reliability and security of such systems. This has led to delays in the adoption of this technology, which could potentially reduce the incidence of electoral fraud. Furthermore, the ruling party has been accused of using violence and intimidation to rig elections. This includes the use of armed thugs to intimidate voters and opposition party members, as well as the manipulation of security agencies to suppress opposition votes. Akinterinwa believes that the current government's lack of willingness to implement electoral reforms is another significant challenge faced by INEC. Despite several recommendations from civil society groups and international observers, the government appears to be unwilling to enact the necessary changes required to ensure free and fair elections. Another challenge faced by INEC is the issue of funding. The commission is heavily dependent on government funding, which often leads to delays in the procurement and deployment of necessary equipment and personnel. This adversely affects the efficiency and effectiveness of INEC, particularly during election periods. In conclusion, the challenges faced by INEC are not new, and they are not limited to Nigeria. However, the intentions of the ruling party, particularly the APC, to rig elections and manipulate the electoral process, have contributed significantly to the difficulties faced by the commission. Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including the government, civil society organizations, and international observers. Only then can Nigeria have truly free and fair elections. https://inflationprotection.org/challenges-faced-by-inec-were-intentions-of-the-ruling-apc-to-rig-bola-akinterinwa/?feed_id=78128&_unique_id=6410a460df551 #Inflation #Retirement #GoldIRA #Wealth #Investing #Arise #news #SimpleIRA #Arise #news
