El Salvador Tells Woke Americans To SHUT UP In recent days, El Salvador has been getting a lot of attention from American activists who have taken to social media to criticize the country’s new president, Nayib Bukele, for his supposed lack of support for LGBTQ+ rights. These “woke” Americans seem to think that El Salvador is an oppressive, backward country that needs to change its ways and embrace Western-style liberalism. However, the truth is much more complicated than that. First of all, it’s important to note that El Salvador is a sovereign nation with its own set of cultural and moral values. While there are certainly areas where the country could make improvements, it’s not up to Americans to dictate how El Salvador should govern itself. Furthermore, Bukele has already taken significant steps to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people in his country. In November 2020, he signed a decree banning discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the workplace. He also announced plans to create permanent LGBTQ+ liaison offices within the country’s police force and public prosecutor’s office. However, Bukele has also made it clear that he does not support same-sex marriage, which has infuriated many American activists. But again, this is a cultural issue that should be left for Salvadorans to decide. It’s not up to Americans to impose their own beliefs and values on another country. It’s worth noting that El Salvador has a complicated history with the United States. The country was ravaged by a civil war in the 1980s, which was partly fueled by American intervention. The United States provided military support to the Salvadoran government, which was accused of numerous human rights abuses. Given this history, it’s understandable that Salvadorans are wary of American interference in their country’s affairs. They don’t want activists from another country to project their own ideologies onto El Salvador. In short, it’s time for Americans to stop trying to “save” El Salvador. The country is not a lost cause, nor is it a primitive backwater that needs to be “enlightened” by Western activists. El Salvador is a proud nation that deserves respect and autonomy.
