The longstanding issue of reparations for African Americans has been a contentious topic for decades, with many advocating for some form of compensation for the generational trauma and oppression experienced by Black people in America. However, one prominent leader of the NAACP recently made headlines for skipping a reparations hearing to help secure $139 million for Ghana, a move that has left some questioning his priorities. Derrick Johnson, the president of the NAACP, was notably absent from a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on reparations on June 19th, 2019. Johnson had been invited to participate in the hearing, which was focused on exploring the issue of reparations and whether the federal government should compensate Black Americans for the legacy of slavery and discrimination. But instead of attending the hearing, Johnson was in Ghana, working with officials there to secure a $139 million loan from the World Bank to support the country's forestry sector. Johnson was part of a delegation of African American business leaders and investors who were visiting Ghana to explore investment opportunities and strengthen ties between the African continent and the African diaspora. Johnson defended his decision to skip the hearing, stating that he believed his trip to Ghana was more important at this time. In an op-ed for The Hill, he wrote, "I was reminded that the fight for reparations is not just about righting past wrongs, but about building a better future for Black people everywhere. And as a leader in the NAACP, I believe it is my duty to seek out new opportunities and partnerships that can help advance our cause." While some praised Johnson for taking steps to enhance economic development in Ghana and strengthen the bond between Africa and its diaspora, others were disappointed that he chose to prioritize this over attending the reparations hearing. Many felt that as the leader of such a prominent civil rights organization, Johnson should have made it a priority to be in attendance and represent the concerns of Black Americans who have been calling for reparations for centuries. The debate over reparations will undoubtedly continue to rage on, with passionate advocates on both sides of the issue. As it stands, it is unclear what kind of federal action, if any, will be taken to address the issue of reparations for African Americans. But Johnson's decision to skip the hearing and focus instead on securing funding for Ghana highlights the complex and multifaceted nature of the struggle for racial justice and equity in America, and the importance of building strong partnerships across borders and oceans. https://inflationprotection.org/head-of-naacp-doesnt-attend-reparations-hearing-prioritizes-obtaining-139m-for-ghana/?feed_id=94172&_unique_id=645361a141672 #Inflation #Retirement #GoldIRA #Wealth #Investing #africa #AmosBrown #AntiBlackRacism #bidenadministration #BidenHarrisAdministration #BlackAmerica #blackentertainment #BlackMedia #BlackNews #BlackNewsChannel #ghana #GhanaVisit #HipHopMedia #HipHopNews #HR40Bill #JoeBiden #JoeBidenReparations #kamalaharris #KamalaHarrisGhana #MoT #NAACP #NAACPReparations #Racism #ReparationsBill #ReparationsTaskForce #ReparationsTaskForceHearing #ReverendAmosBrown #SanFrancisco #TDHipHop #TonyDelerme #QualifiedRetirementPlan #africa #AmosBrown #AntiBlackRacism #bidenadministration #BidenHarrisAdministration #BlackAmerica #blackentertainment #BlackMedia #BlackNews #BlackNewsChannel #ghana #GhanaVisit #HipHopMedia #HipHopNews #HR40Bill #JoeBiden #JoeBidenReparations #kamalaharris #KamalaHarrisGhana #MoT #NAACP #NAACPReparations #Racism #ReparationsBill #ReparationsTaskForce #ReparationsTaskForceHearing #ReverendAmosBrown #SanFrancisco #TDHipHop #TonyDelerme
