If you use your IRA funds to purchase a life insurance policy, you will be subject to a 15% penalty and other taxes. 4. Do Not Use Your Self-Directed IRA Funds to Make Loans You are not allowed to use your self-directed IRA funds to make loans. If you do, you could be subject to a 15% penalty and other taxes. By avoiding these four things, you will be able to make the most of your self-directed IRA and ensure that you are following the rules and regulations set forth by the IRS.
