Jackson County officials are talking about their increases to the Public Employees Retirement System.They received their notices at the same time they do every year. However, they were anticipating the payments to go down because of market improvementsThat is not what happened.Officials say the PERS payments are going up. They anticipate paying $4 million into the retirement system in the next fiscal year. The budget year starts in July.The increase will mean county leaders will evaluate their budgets and look for ways to accomodate the increase. Officials say that may mean cuts.Recent layoffs to the Jackson County Sheriff' Office were partly prompted by the notice and are considered a preemptive measure.... AARP Oregon Legislative Director Rick Bennett has told state legislators that his 500,000-member organization believes cutting PERS is not the way to balance the state's budget. In sometimes pointed testimony before a Senate committee, Bennett castigated Governor Kitzhaber and the legislative leaders for "trying to pit young against old" in trying to tie education support to reduced retirement benefits for seniors as well as cuts to care for elderly Oregonians and those with disabilities. When one senator said PERS cuts amount to "shared sacrifice," Bennett reminded him that legislators continue to protect hundreds of tax loopholes for profitable corporations and wealthy Oregonians.
